I’m a mom of three small kids. I also have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
For a few years after getting my degree, I worked in research and development in a big company and was on a career fast track. I also worked long hours and traveled all over the country. My job was all-or-nothing … there just aren’t many “mommy-track” options for PhD engineers (or really any professional women, for that matter), even at supposedly family-friendly companies. So, I quit when I was 7 months pregnant with my first child, moved across the company to follow a job opportunity for my (also PhD engineer) husband, and have been home ever since.
Starting in a new place with a new baby, most people who know me as a mom have no idea that I have a Ph.D. in engineering, so I’ve been able to explore being a mommy without the baggage of a career lurking in the shadows for the last five years. Now that my youngest is one, I’m wanting to dust off the career side of me and explore my options. Education is a field that is appealing to me for the mommy-friendly schedule. My goal with this blog is to document my journey, with its ups and downs.
